After a ten-year planning process, it took just a few short years for Otay Ranch to grow into a vibrant neighborhood that combines the best of old-style community charm with the latest in modern urban design. Today, residents enjoy extensive pedestrian parks, strolling and biking along a massive network of trails and paseos, and meeting friends at our local town centers.
A Rich History: From Cattle Ranch to Modern Metropolis
Long before the beautifully paved promenades and modern homes were built, the land that makes up the 91913 zip code had a rich and rugged history.
-
The Early Land Grant (1829): The area was originally known as Rancho del Otay, a Mexican land grant given by Governor José María de Echeandía to the Estudillo family. For decades, it served as a vital part of the sheep and cattle trade between Mexico and Southern California.
-
The Birch Family Era (1936): Stephen Birch, a prominent mining engineer and copper magnate, purchased the property during the Great Depression. He expanded the ranch to nearly 29,000 acres, transforming it into a massive cattle and agricultural operation that thrived through World War II.
-
A New Vision (1980s – 1999): In the mid-1980s, the descendants of the Birch family sold the sprawling ranch to developers with a grand vision. By 1999, that vision became a reality, opening its doors as the premier residential destination in the South Bay.
